Dye bath – trapping late summer’s sunshine

I love this time of year in the garden. Summer is coming to an end with a triumphant flourish. Branches are heavy with their gluts of fruit, harvesting becomes a daily task and preserving produce for winter begins.

This week, in the evenings after work I have dug up my potatoes, cut the last of the rhubarb, picked plums, picked elderberries, picked tomatoes, picked grapes, picked the last of the currants and cut down the raspberry canes.

My Solidago virgaurea is now in bloom and in a desperate attempt to ‘trap’ the last of the summer sunshine for the rest of the year I created a dye bath with the flowers and dyed a white linen scarf.

I can feel the season beginning to change, the familiar rhythm of abundance and completion making way for autumn.

Happy September everyone x
